By clamping the dowel jig to your workpiece, you can easily utilize it as a guide while drilling holes in the workpiece, and then proceed to insert shaker pegs into the holes.

How to Build a Shaker Peg Rail
Although this project may initially appear daunting, you will discover that it is indeed achievable and the results will bring you satisfaction if you decide to give it a go. With just one morning dedicated to it, you can successfully construct 130″ of peg rail.
The Material List
Begin by collecting all of the necessary materials.
- Drill with 1/2″ spade
- Wood glue or liquid nails
- Measuring Tape
- Level
- Square
- Rubber mallet
- Wet rag
- Gloves (optional)
- Miter saw or circular saw (You can also have your wood cut to size at home improvement stores.)
PEG RACK MATERIALS NEEDED
- Shaker Pegs
- Wood for back board
- Wood filler
You have the option of using 1×6 select pine for my project.
Poplar is a great option for lastingness, with the flexibility to use any wood size you prefer, as long as there’s ample room for the shaker pegs. Opting for 1x4s achieves a contemporary and sleek appearance, while 1×6 to 1×8 sizes provide a more conventional aesthetic.
WOODEN PEG RACK PROCESS
Ensure that you cut your board to the appropriate dimensions so that it can fit snugly into the designated space within your room. Take note of the fact that my mudroom is enclosed by the wooden peg rack, hence it is imperative to utilize miter cuts at the corners.
MEASURE AND MARK SPACING
After that, create a straight line in the middle of your board. This line will serve as a reference to position the shaker pegs.
After establishing your guide-line, it is necessary to decide the desired distance between the placements of your pegs.
Having three inches of space between the pegs didn’t provide enough room to hang coats conveniently. On the other hand, with only five inches of space, I couldn’t make the most of the pegs for winter gear!
After establishing your placement, employ a measuring tape to designate the position for each peg. Begin with a distance of 3 inches inward from the end to accommodate screws, and then proceed to mark every 4 inches along the center line.
Make sure to provide spacing for corner pegs when installing a peg rail around a room. Leave one wall with a gap of pegs to ensure the opposite wall has a functional peg, otherwise, they will overlap.
DRILL YOUR HOLES
Afterward, proceed with drilling the holes. In case your shaker pegs have a 1/2″ tenon, you can utilize a 1/2″ spade bit for drilling each hole. If you possess other tools, there are various methods available for drilling the holes. Nevertheless, this approach is considered the simplest for those who are new to the task.
GLUE (OR SCREW) YOUR PEGS IN
To complete the process, attach your pegs firmly onto the back board. If liquid nails is available, it can be used, but wood glue is also highly effective. If you intend to paint your wooden peg rack, ensure that the glue is suitable for painting.
To secure your peg, apply a line of glue around its tenon and coat the inner surface of the drilled hole. Gently tap the peg into place using a rubber mallet. Keep a wet cloth nearby to easily remove any excess glue.
Once you allow your pegs to dry according to the glue instructions, your task is complete!
INSTALL AND PAINT
After the glue has completely dried, use screws to attach your peg rack into the studs. Remember to ensure that you sink the screws into the wood at a lower level so that you can easily conceal them with wood filler, achieving a smooth and flawless appearance.
Afterwards, apply caulk to the corners and seams, and conclude with a coat of paint!
