Our goal is to maximize the usage of every area in a small house, and this do-it-yourself peg rail can provide a useful function to an inconvenient corner in your bedroom.
As a bonus, it was an affordable option, a simple project suitable for beginners, and could be completed in just a single day.
By allocating a small amount of vertical space, our room now has additional storage capacity for items such as hats, jackets, and bags. This project can also be effectively implemented in a laundry, kitchen, or closet.
Tools & Materials
Cut down boards and mark the holes
You can either trim your MDF boards to the desired length using a saw, or if you do not have one, you can have the hardware store cut them for you. Our boards were approximately 6 feet long.
To begin, measure and indicate the locations where the holes should be drilled for the shaker pegs on the 1×4 board. In the case of having six pegs, divide the entire length of the board by seven (representing the spaces around six pegs). Proceed to mark the board at equal intervals according to this measurement. It is important to ensure that the dots are also centered vertically on the board.
Drill your holes
To drill the holes for the shaker pegs, one can utilize a spade bit.
Spade bits are a type of drill attachment that can create larger holes compared to regular drill bits. They are useful for tasks involving dowels, pegs, or the construction of floating shelves. Available in various sizes, shaker pegs generally have the same dimensions. Therefore, to assist you in obtaining the correct spade bit size, we recommend measuring the width of the notched bottom part of your shaker pegs and selecting the corresponding spade bit size.
Glue and hammer the pegs in
To ensure the shaker pegs are secure, follow these step-by-step instructions: apply wood glue to the lower section of each peg, then carefully insert them into their designated spots using a mallet or hammer. For an added layer of safeguarding against potential damage, consider placing a tea towel between the peg and the striking tool.
Nail top shelf on
To create a more polished appearance, secure the 1×3 board on top of the 1×4 board like a small shelf protruding over the pegs, and apply caulking along the seam to achieve the best possible finish.
Find your studs and attach to the wall
To locate the studs on your wall, use painters tape or a pencil to identify their positions. Next, position your peg rail against the wall and drill into the stud. After securing one screw, ensure that the rail is level and install another screw into another stud if possible. Lastly, fill the drilled holes with wood filler.
Caulk and paint
Begin by taking your caulk and apply it in a continuous line along the top shelf part of the peg rail, as well as the bottom and any sides. This is done to achieve a more seamless appearance. Allow sufficient time for the caulk to dry completely. Once dry, proceed to paint over the entire area. It is important to note that since your MDF boards are most likely already primed, there is no need to apply a primer beforehand.
Once you have completed all the necessary steps, you will have finished the task.
ADVANTAGES OF WOOD FURNITURE
In the past, furniture was typically constructed from wood. However, with the industrial revolution, furniture made from materials such as steel, aluminum, glass, and plastic started to emerge. While these materials have brought significant changes to the furniture industry, wood remains an essential material for manufacturing furniture. Wood not only has lasting durability but also possesses a timeless quality. Whether it is a wardrobe in the living room or a dining chair, wood furniture manufacturers skillfully blend timeless elegance and sturdy functionality with modern or rustic styles.
The undeniable advantages of wooden furniture become evident when it is compared to furniture made from steel or glass as the wood’s natural beauty enhances the room with warmth and character.
Wood furniture is known for its strength and durability, as it can withstand everyday wear and tear without much maintenance. It is a natural material that is long-lasting, making it a great investment. Wood furniture can even be passed down through generations with minimal care. One of the advantages of wood furniture is its ease of maintenance. Simply wiping the wood chair parts with a wood cleaner regularly is sufficient. It is important to not let water or dust settle on the tables, chairs, or armoires for extended periods of time. When adding wood furniture to a room, it can completely transform its look and feel. Wood furniture brings elegance, charm, and sophistication to any space. While solid wood furniture may initially cost more than furniture made from other materials, it holds greater value. The natural grain of wood ensures that each piece of furniture is unique. Although the upfront cost may be higher, the long-term benefits make it worth it. Depending on your budget, you have the option to choose furniture made from softwoods like pine or opt for harder, more exotic woods. One of the beauties of wood furniture is its modifiability. Over time, you can sand and stain or paint it to give it a completely new look. This allows wood furniture to have multiple lives and continuously adds to its versatility.
