This project, which is a DIY shaker peg rail or coat rack, is extremely simple and requires only three tools: a miter saw, brad nailer, and a drill.
The item can be utilized for organizing one’s entryway by hanging keys, jackets, purses, dog leashes, or other items. Additionally, it is simple to modify the size of the item, should one desire to make it bigger.
To construct this coat rack, we utilized a 1×4 board and equipped it with five shaker pegs that are ½” in thickness.
How to Build a DIY Coat Rack with Shaker Pegs:
1. Cut two boards from the 1×4
To carry out the task, utilize a miter saw in order to cut two boards measuring 1×4 to a length of 25 inches.
2. Mark and drill holes for the shaker pegs
Begin by drawing a line through the midpoint of one of the 1x4s using a pencil. Proceed to mark a hole for each of the 5 shaker pegs along this line. Start from one end and mark the first hole at 3 3/4″, followed by the second hole at 4 1/2″. Repeat this process until all 5 holes are marked. Then, utilize a 1/2″ drill bit to drill the 5 holes for the shaker pegs, ensuring that the drill goes almost all the way through the 1×4. It is acceptable if certain holes end up going completely through. Next, test the fit of a peg in each hole, making sure they are not loose but can be snugly inserted.
3. Attach shaker pegs to coat rack
In order to proceed, begin by applying a small amount of wood glue around the lower part of the first peg. Next, insert the peg into the hole and secure it by using a hammer. If there is any excessive wood glue, promptly remove it using a damp paper towel.
Continuing with a step-by-step approach, proceed to repeat this process for the remaining shaker pegs.
4. Attach shelf to coat rack
Firstly, spread wood glue along the upper edge of the board with the pegs. Afterward, secure the other 1×4 at a right angle to it using 1 1/4″ brad nails to create the coat rack’s top shelf. Employ clamps to aid in keeping everything in position.
5. Prime and Paint the DIY coat rack with shaker pegs
Once the DIY coat rack shelf is constructed, the next step is to apply paint or stain. We opted to paint ours in Sherwin Williams’ Tricorn black. To begin, we applied a layer of primer, followed by two coats of paint.
What is your opinion on our DIY coat rack? It has been very helpful in keeping our entryway organized!
ADVANTAGES OF WOOD FURNITURE
In the past, furniture was typically constructed using wood. However, with the rise of the industrial revolution, furniture crafted from materials like steel, aluminum, glass, and plastic became more prevalent. Although these materials brought about significant changes in the furniture industry, wood remains an essential material in furniture production. Wood is not only enduring but also timeless. Whether it is a wardrobe in the living room or a dining chair, manufacturers of wooden furniture successfully blend timeless elegance and sturdy functionality with modern or rustic styles.
When comparing wooden furniture to steel or glass furniture, it is undeniable that wood offers the advantage of adding warmth and character to any room due to its natural beauty.
Wood furniture is known for its strength and durability, requiring minimal maintenance. It is a natural material that can withstand a lot of abuse, such as spills and scratches, without getting damaged. Solid wood furniture can last for many generations with little care. In terms of maintenance, wood furniture is easy to take care of. Regularly wiping the wood chair parts with a wood cleaner is usually sufficient. It is important to avoid letting water or dust settle on tables, chairs, or armoires for long periods. Adding wood furniture to a room can completely transform its look and feel. It brings elegance, charm, and sophistication to any space, becoming a staple in home decor. While solid wood furniture may initially cost more than furniture made from other materials, its value is higher. The natural grain of wood ensures that each furniture piece is unique. Although the initial price may be higher, you will enjoy the benefits of wood furniture for many years to come. Depending on your budget, you can choose furniture made from softwood like pine or opt for harder, more exotic woods. One of the advantages of wood furniture is its modifiability. Over time, it can be sanded, stained, or painted to give it a fresh look. This flexibility allows you to give your wood furniture a second, third, or even fourth life.
