Before You Begin

Determine Design

Decide on the dimensions of the coat rack desired.

Our Coat Rack

• Is 36”s long x 7.75”s wide x 7/8”s thick.
• Hooks are 8”s apart from each other for reference.
• Determine the type of wood you want to use.

Tip For Picking Wood

Opting for pine would be the most economical choice for painting the coat rack.

It is better to use high-quality hardwood if you plan on sanding, staining, and applying polyurethane. Poplar wood was chosen for our project as it allowed us to achieve our desired color after staining.

How To Build Wall Mounted Hooks

Step 1: Cut Two Boards To Size

Employ a circular saw to reduce the wood to the desired dimensions.

Step 2: Smooth Edges

Use sandpaper to eliminate any uneven surfaces.

Step 3: Apply Stain To Wood

Choose a hue of stain. This particular stain hue was utilized.

Keep in mind that the color will become darker if the stain is left on for a longer duration.

Tips For Staining Wood

• Place your wood on the sawhorses, then a 2×4, then wax paper over the 2x4s.
• Wear latex gloves.
• Open the stain and stir it (do not shake). Make sure you read the instructions on the stain.
• Make sure you are doing this in a well-ventilated area as the stain has a mild odor.
• Use a cut-up old tee-shirt or old towel to apply the stain.

Step 4: Wipe Stain

After about 10 minutes, use a fresh cloth to remove the stain.

Step 5: Let Wood Fully Dry

Allow 48 hours for the stain to dry.

Step 6: Add Poly

Choose a polyurethane for your project. We opted for a satin coating.

If you prefer a more rustic look for your coat rack, I recommend staying with the satin finish. However, there are other options such as semi-gloss or gloss that you may want to take into account.

Tips For Applying Polyurethane

• Wear latex gloves.
• Use a 2” wide brush and brush on the poly.
• Light coats are better than thick coats
• Make sure you brush the edges of the board after you do the top
• Let dry for 24 hours

Step 7: Sand In Between Coats Of Poly

After the initial coat has dried, utilize 220 grit sandpaper to refine the appearance of the first layer.

• This will remove air bubbles etc.
• Don’t worry that the first coat will look white and powdery when done.
• After sanding take a damp cloth, with water, and wipe down the board.

Step 8: Apply A Second Coat Of Poly

Make sure everything is dry by using a dry cloth, then add another layer of poly.

Optional Step

You can perform this step as often as necessary. The finish will become more resilient with each layer of poly. Our practice involves applying no more than three (3) coats, and we only did two (2) on this occasion.

Step 9: Hang Boards

Measure and find the center of your board. We placed one hook already on and added the others once the board was mounted.

Initially, the board must be mounted onto the wall. Employ a stud finder to identify the ideal location for hanging the board.

Drill Pilot Holes

It is important to drill pilot holes on the board that can adequately support the 4” screw.

Make It Level

Place the level onto the board and check that the bubble is level.

Screw It Into Studs

One individual should apply pressure to the board against the wall while the other fastens it into the studs.

Step 10: Add Hooks (Hopefully Over Screws)

After mounting the board, you can indicate the spots where the hooks should be placed. As previously mentioned, the hooks should be positioned above the screw holes to conceal them and achieve a polished appearance.

Step 11: Attach All Hooks

Keep attaching your hooks until all of them are in place.

Step 12: Hang Second Board and Hooks

Ensure that both the top and bottom wall hooks are level by utilizing a 4-foot level.

Mount your DIY coat rack at the bottom by following the steps mentioned above.

Fortunately, my family has already acknowledged the necessity of utilizing this space.
