Do you require an uncomplicated method to hang your coats, jackets, and bookbags? Look no further as these dual wall-mounted hooks are the ideal answer that can be tailored to your area.
Why build two sets of wall hooks?
As children grow, they require more room. To address this, we included hooks that are readily available to everyone. Consequently, no one can claim they are unable to reach the hooks and store their belongings.
Recommended Supplies
- 1” x 8” x 8’ Pine or Poplar Board Cut to Size-We were able to get two coat rack boards out of one size
- Circular saw (if cutting yourself)
- Hooks (My husband loved the look of these simple hooks from Home Depot)
- Speed Square
- 4′ Level
- Tape Measurer
- Cordless Drill
- Stain color of your choice
- 220 Grit Sandpaper
- Old T-shirt cut up
- Polyurethane in the finish of your choice
- 2” brush (This brush is a great economical brush)
- Sawhorses
- Wax paper
- Old 2 x 4s to rest the wood on while staining
- Mineral Spirits to clean brush
- Latex Gloves
Other Hooks to Purchase
Depending on the finishes around the surrounding areas, the following hooks are some options that I would have taken into account.
- Rustic Matte Black Hooks for a more Farmhouse look. You honestly won’t believe the price on this ten-pack.
- Decorative Brass Hooks from Target for a more sophisticated look.
Before You Begin
Determine Design
Decide on the dimensions of the coat rack desired.
Our Coat Rack
- Is 36”s long x 7.75”s wide x 7/8”s thick.
- Hooks are 8”s apart from each other for reference.
- Determine the type of wood you want to use.
Tip For Picking Wood
Opting for pine would be the most economical choice for painting the coat rack.
It is better to use high-quality hardwood if you plan on sanding, staining, and applying polyurethane. Poplar wood was chosen for our project as it allowed us to achieve our desired color after staining.
How To Build Wall Mounted Hooks
Step 1: Cut Two Boards To Size
Employ a circular saw to reduce the wood to the desired dimensions.
Step 2: Smooth Edges
Use sandpaper to eliminate any uneven surfaces.
Step 3: Apply Stain To Wood
Choose a hue of stain. This particular stain hue was utilized.
Keep in mind that the color will become darker if the stain is left on for a longer duration.
Tips For Staining Wood
- Place your wood on the sawhorses, then a 2×4, then wax paper over the 2x4s.
- Wear latex gloves.
- Open the stain and stir it (do not shake). Make sure you read the instructions on the stain.
- Make sure you are doing this in a well-ventilated area as the stain has a mild odor.
- Use a cut-up old tee-shirt or old towel to apply the stain.
Step 4: Wipe Stain
After about 10 minutes, use a fresh cloth to remove the stain.
Step 5: Let Wood Fully Dry
Allow 48 hours for the stain to dry.
Step 6: Add Poly
Choose a polyurethane for your project. We opted for a satin coating.
If you prefer a more rustic look for your coat rack, I recommend staying with the satin finish. However, there are other options such as semi-gloss or gloss that you may want to take into account.
Tips For Applying Polyurethane
- Wear latex gloves.
- Use a 2” wide brush and brush on the poly.
- Light coats are better than thick coats
- Make sure you brush the edges of the board after you do the top
- Let dry for 24 hours
Step 7: Sand In Between Coats Of Poly
After the initial coat has dried, utilize 220 grit sandpaper to refine the appearance of the first layer.
- This will remove air bubbles etc.
- Don’t worry that the first coat will look white and powdery when done.
- After sanding take a damp cloth, with water, and wipe down the board.
Step 8: Apply A Second Coat Of Poly
Make sure everything is dry by using a dry cloth, then add another layer of poly.
Optional Step
You can perform this step as often as necessary. The finish will become more resilient with each layer of poly. Our practice involves applying no more than three (3) coats, and we only did two (2) on this occasion.
Step 9: Hang Boards
Measure and find the center of your board. We placed one hook already on and added the others once the board was mounted.
Initially, the board must be mounted onto the wall. Employ a stud finder to identify the ideal location for hanging the board.
Drill Pilot Holes
It is important to drill pilot holes on the board that can adequately support the 4” screw.
Make It Level
Place the level onto the board and check that the bubble is level.
Screw It Into Studs
One individual should apply pressure to the board against the wall while the other fastens it into the studs.
Step 10: Add Hooks (Hopefully Over Screws)
After mounting the board, you can indicate the spots where the hooks should be placed. As previously mentioned, the hooks should be positioned above the screw holes to conceal them and achieve a polished appearance.
Step 11: Attach All Hooks
Keep attaching your hooks until all of them are in place.
Special Notes
- If you only plan on hanging coats, then you could use drywall anchors.
- If you plan on hanging backpacks, then you need to have your coat racks hung into the studs.
- We used 4”s long screws due to the thickness of the board + drywall being 1 – 5/8” thick and wanting enough “meat” into the studs.
Step 12: Hang Second Board and Hooks
Ensure that both the top and bottom wall hooks are level by utilizing a 4-foot level.
Mount your DIY coat rack at the bottom by following the steps mentioned above.
Fortunately, my family has already acknowledged the necessity of utilizing this space.
BONUS: Modern Home Decor Ideas for Lovers and Skeptics Alike
Even though modern design can be combined with farmhouse and rustic styles, there are essential elements that define the pure modern design style.
- In modern home style, there is a light and airy feel about the space rather than a cluttered and over styled look.
- The furnishings in modern design are streamlined, straight, and tailored rather than plush and curvy.
- With most modern home decor, designers use a neutral color scheme with a mix of natural materials like leather, wood, and metal.
- In modern style, there is less emphasis on heavy and elaborate window treatments. Instead modern home decor calls for as much natural light as possible. Therefore, windows are left unadorned or have light and tailored curtains.
Modern kitchen wall decor
In contemporary decor, there is no fear of utilizing rich, intense, or melancholic shades throughout any area. The kitchen, styled in a contemporary manner, combines various textures, such as the wooden cupboards, marble surfaces and backsplash, and the dim panelled wall above the shelving. The designer opted for a simplistic approach when styling the shelf, incorporating a few pieces to add novelty shapes and personality to the design.
Mixed furniture
The natural wood dining table complements the black bench seating with their sleek and streamlined but architecturally appealing features. The candle holders of different styles lend a touch of texture to the table.
Modern lighting
A new light fixture offers the most cost-effective transformation for any space. Contemporary spaces often incorporate abstract and geometric lighting fixtures with multiple lights that add sophistication and enhance room brightness. These light fixtures are versatile, updating the look of entryways and even larger rooms like bedrooms.
Modern wall decor ideas
A gallery wall is a great idea for modern wall decor. Although they come in various styles, a simple and minimal color tone can match modern decor.
The gallery wall by Pretty Real has a varied style but with limited use of colors. To achieve a simpler layout, gather pictures that have the same size, theme, and color. They are equally stunning in both a living room or hallway.
Modern dining furniture
Midcentury furniture denotes the furniture style that gained popularity between the 1940s and the late 1950s, and is aligned with contemporary designs. This uncomplicated style boasts a minimalist approach with no unnecessary embellishments. The dining chairs on display draw inspiration from the Eames Plastic Side Chairs, conceptualized by Charles and Ray Ames in 1950.
Open windows
Opulence and sophistication are associated with heavy draperies, yet they are not suitable for contemporary interior design. Adopting a minimalistic approach to window treatments, or even completely foregoing them when appropriate, represents an uncomplicated modern decoration approach that can be easily implemented for any window. If covering your windows is necessary, choose a plain and neatly tailored white or ivory curtain panel.
Modern wall decor ideas
In spaces with modern decor, wallpaper on accent walls or between shelves can add an unexpected and enlivening touch. Consider this botanical wallpaper with a mixture of muted and bright colors. It adds subtle interest to this kitchen shelf and blends with the accessories in a way that does not overwhelm them.
Natural lighting
Due to their warm, textural qualities, big woven pendant lights are increasingly popular in contemporary kitchen decor, providing a soft contrast to a sleek space. If you wish to incorporate more modern elements into your home, this lighting style could be the ideal choice for your kitchen. By bringing a fresh aesthetic to the traditional kitchen, these lights complement rather than compete with it.
Open concept
As a layout that gained popularity during midcentury design, open concept living has become a favored aspect of modern design. Though not universally adored, when executed expertly, it can produce stunning results. Ames Interiors, an interior design company, produced an exemplary farmhouse modern decor style for this room. Due to the open floor plan, minimizing your extra accessories is important as it is difficult to conceal clutter.
Modern farmhouse decor
Aesthetic appeal can be heightened in modern homes by blending disparate materials and styles. Combining natural features like distressed wood and exposed beams with luxurious embellishments such as brass fixtures and marble slabs can yield stunning results.
Modern bohemian decor
When it comes to modern coffee table decor, the appropriate decorative accents can significantly enhance its appearance. This coffee table with a blond wood top and woven design blends perfectly with bohemian, farmhouse, and eclectic styles. Minimizing the number of accessories is ideal for styling modern coffee tables. It is recommended to combine a couple of sleek coffee table books with a set of vases or incorporate an architectural piece like a sculpture to create added interest. Regardless of your choice, it is crucial not to go overboard with the accessories.
Open shelving
Open shelving can be a wonderful enhancement to contemporary decor, whether located in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or family room through the inclusion of a self-standing bookshelf. The use of “white” space, or the absence of objects between shelves, can significantly contribute to the design’s perceived spaciousness. Additionally, wooden shelves afford an invaluable textural element to any design.
Clean lines
In modern spaces, the combination of sleek and natural can be achieved through contemporary decorating ideas. By incorporating polished wood elements, the natural texture can be accentuated while still maintaining a chic and sophisticated look.
Neutral color scheme
This kitchen boasts a stunning contemporary design with its tasteful use of neutral colors and open shelves. The countertops are a delightful mix of wood and marble that provide a lovely textural contrast. Adding an element of boldness to the space is a lone pink chair that stands out among its white counterparts in the dining area.
Modern rustic decor
The rustic aesthetic of this room seamlessly blends with modern design, which values texture. It’s worth noting the presence of a sizable TV placed above a half-stone wall, as electronics have become essential components of contemporary living spaces. But to truly embody modern style, technology should be integrated in a way that is harmonious with the overall design.
